Mild weather in Wales not lulling Councils into false sense of security

Wales has been basking in its Indian summer but local councils are determined not to be caught out by another bout of severe winter weather. Carmarthenshire council has extensive salt supplies in stock and also quarry gritstone stored up in preparation for extreme weather. All ice clearing vehicles will have sufficient ice melting spray so that clear visibility is assured at all times.

An inventory of Carmarthenshire county’s 1,100 grit bins has been concluded and they will be topped up as and when necessary. Flintshire is another county determined not to be dictated to by the whims of winter weather, with more than 10,000 tonnes of salt on hand.

Conwy county borough council states that its priority is to ensure that salt is spread on the highway prior to ice forming. Salting occurs during a two and half to three hour period during the evening followed by another session the next morning assuming icy conditions have been forecast.

The importance of being prepared for bad weather cannot be overemphasised. Every motorist should ensure that there is a supply of ice melting spray on hand. Even if a motorist is only making a local trip of a few miles in familiar territory, severe weather can take grip rapidly. A lack of ice melting spray can make all the difference between a tolerable encounter with bad weather and a horrific one. Motorists can help themselves and overstretched councils by stocking up with this spray during times of inclement weather.
